GREAT BEND, Kan. — The Great Bend community is mourning the loss of 72-year-old Mark DeWald, who tragically passed away following a two-vehicle crash on Wednesday evening in Barton County.
According to the Barton County Sheriff’s Office, the crash occurred shortly before 9 p.m. near K-96 and Northwest 30 Road. DeWald was driving east on K-96 when his vehicle, a Ford Fusion, crossed the center line and collided head-on with a westbound vehicle driven by a 17-year-old. The Fusion caught fire upon impact, but the flames were quickly extinguished. DeWald was pronounced dead at the scene, while the teen driver was hospitalized with minor injuries.
Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash. No additional details regarding contributing factors have been released at this time.
