BOONE COUNTY, Ind. — The Indiana National Guard has released the identity of the soldier who lost his life in a multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 65 in Boone County on Friday, Nov. 14.
Officials confirmed that Spc. Terry Frye, of Lafayette, was the guardsman killed in the collision. Frye had served in the Indiana National Guard since March 2020 as an infantryman with Company D in Frankfort.
The crash was reported around 12:15 p.m. along southbound I-65 near the I-865 interchange. The interstate reopened around 4:20 p.m. after several hours of investigation and cleanup.
According to the Boone County Sheriff’s Office, the crash involved one Humvee, an SUV, and a car hauler truck. A spokesperson for the Indiana National Guard said the soldiers were traveling to Camp Atterbury for drill weekend when the collision occurred.
Investigators say there were two Humvees in the area at the time, traveling in a staggered convoy formation. The Humvee without a trailer flipped over, ejecting all four guardsmen inside. Spc. Frye was pronounced deceased at the scene, while the three other soldiers sustained serious injuries and were transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. The drivers of the SUV and car hauler were treated at the scene.
The cause of the Humvee’s rollover remains under investigation.
In a statement, an Indiana National Guard spokesperson said, “The loss of any of our Guardsmen is tragic, and we offer our deepest and heartfelt condolences to the soldier’s family, loved ones, and friends.”
Maj. Gen. Larry Muennich, Indiana National Guard adjutant general, added:
“We take our responsibility to soldiers and their families seriously. As an organization, we become a family to each other, and the death of a fellow service member resonates throughout the force. We offer our sincerest condolences to the soldier’s family, friends, and fellow soldiers. The loss is felt deeply, and we will continue to support his family.”
The crash remains under active investigation, and officials say updates on the condition of the injured soldiers will be released once families are notified.
