In Loving Memory of Justin Meritt

It is with great sadness that we share the news of the passing of 42-year-old Justin Meritt, who was found deceased on U.S. 60 near Gold Canyon on Tuesday afternoon. Meritt, who was wanted by Mesa police in connection with serious felony investigations, tragically died during a law enforcement standoff.

The incident began shortly after 2:30 p.m. when officers located Meritt driving near Silly Mountain Road in Apache Junction. Despite repeated efforts by Mesa police and SWAT negotiators to safely bring him into custody, Meritt refused to exit his vehicle. When SWAT members approached, he was discovered deceased in the driver’s seat with a handgun. Preliminary reports indicate the death was self-inflicted.

This heartbreaking situation reminds us of the fragility of life and the importance of offering support and compassion to those facing personal struggles. Friends, family, and the community are left to grieve the loss of a life that ended far too soon.

Mesa police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding both the events that led to the standoff and the case for which Meritt was wanted.

May Justin Meritt be remembered with compassion, and may those affected by this tragedy find strength, comfort, and peace during this difficult time.
