EVANSVILLE, Ind. — Police are investigating a deadly shooting that left a 17-year-old boy dead and two others injured early Wednesday morning in the 1700 block of Marshall Avenue. According to dispatch records, the first 911 calls came in at 5:35 a.m., reporting multiple gunshots and people fleeing the area.
Evansville Police Department Sgt. Anthony Aussieker said callers described hearing between 10 and 12 gunshots, and some witnesses reported seeing individuals running shortly after the gunfire. When officers arrived, they located three victims—one inside a vehicle struck by gunfire, and two others outside the car.
Authorities confirmed that 17-year-old Josiah Madrid died at the scene. The two surviving victims, a 15-year-old and an adult, were transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Sgt. Aussieker expressed the emotional weight of the tragedy, especially as it occurred on the eve of a holiday centered around family and gratitude. “This is supposed to be a time where families gather. There’s a family that’s going to have an empty seat at their table, and as a parent, that’s heartbreaking,” he said.
Police say there is no immediate threat to the public, but the investigation remains active. Officers used K9 units and drones Wednesday morning to search for a possible suspect, though it is still unclear whether the shooting was targeted or what led up to the gunfire.
Anyone with information is urged to contact the Evansville Police Department as detectives continue working to piece together what happened.
