Iowa — Authorities have released new details regarding a fatal pedestrian crash that occurred early Tuesday morning on Interstate 80. The Iowa State Patrol confirmed that 36-year-old Nicholas Andres Quintero, of Toledo, Ohio, was the individual killed in the incident.
The crash happened around 5:30 a.m. in the westbound lanes near the 202 mile marker. According to the responding sergeant, Quintero was struck while in the right-hand lane of travel. Officials have not yet determined why he was in the roadway, and the report does not identify which vehicle or driver was involved.
Investigators noted that a dense fog advisory was in effect at the time, significantly reducing visibility for motorists in the area. Because of the poor conditions, authorities say it is possible the driver may not have realized they hit a pedestrian.
Emergency crews temporarily blocked part of the interstate Tuesday morning as they worked to investigate the scene and remove debris.
The Iowa State Patrol says the incident remains under active investigation. Officials are asking anyone who witnessed the crash or who may have additional information to call 319-396-4414.
