ENGLEWOOD, Fla. — A tragic accident at an Englewood Walmart claimed the life of a 3-year-old boy Tuesday night after he was struck by a Jeep in the store’s parking lot, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The incident occurred around 8:25 p.m. at the Walmart located on South McCall Road near Winchester Boulevard. Investigators say the child’s mother had been placing her infant into their vehicle when her 3-year-old son walked in front of a nearby Jeep and stopped directly in its path.
Troopers reported that the Jeep’s driver, a 27-year-old woman, began pulling forward from the parking space and turned right, unaware the child was standing immediately in front of the vehicle. The Jeep struck the boy, causing critical injuries.
Emergency crews responded quickly, and the child was airlifted to Tampa General Hospital, where he later died despite medical efforts.
Footage from the scene showed crime scene tape surrounding a large portion of the parking lot near the home and pharmacy entrances. The yellow Jeep involved in the crash remained at the center of the investigation as authorities examined the area.
With 73 million Americans traveling for the holidays—including more than 4 million in Florida—AAA has warned of crowded stores, increased foot traffic, and the heightened risk of parking lot accidents during this time of year.
The Florida Highway Patrol continues to investigate the incident. No additional details have been released.
