Valparaiso Man Dies in Single-Vehicle Crash; Authorities Investigating

Valparaiso, IN — Authorities are investigating a fatal single-vehicle crash that occurred Wednesday morning near the intersection of County Road 700 N and State Road 149.

At approximately 8:12 a.m., Porter County Sheriff’s Officers responded to reports of a vehicle submerged in water. Upon arrival, officers discovered a 2002 Kia in Salt Creek. The sole occupant, 24-year-old Austin Palmateer of Valparaiso, was found outside the vehicle in the water and was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Preliminary findings indicate that the vehicle was traveling eastbound on County Road 700 N when, for reasons still under investigation, it left the roadway to the north and entered the creek. The vehicle remained submerged upon officers’ arrival.

The Porter County Coroner’s Office confirmed Austin’s identity. Autopsy and toxicology reports are pending. Authorities continue to investigate the crash to determine the exact circumstances leading to the incident.

This tragic event has left family, friends, and the Valparaiso community grieving. The Sheriff’s Office reminds residents to exercise caution while driving, especially near waterways or in areas with potentially hazardous road conditions.
