Washington, D.C. — Two National Guardsmen were shot Wednesday in downtown Washington, D.C., officials confirmed. The incident was reported by Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem and law enforcement sources, though the circumstances surrounding the shooting remain unclear.
The D.C. Metropolitan Police Department said on X that the scene has been secured and one suspect is in custody. Authorities advised the public to avoid the area while the investigation continues.
The National Guard did not immediately respond to requests for comment. President Donald Trump has been briefed on the incident, according to White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt, who said, “The White House is aware and actively monitoring this tragic situation. The President has been briefed.”
National Guard troops from multiple states have been stationed in Washington, D.C., for several months as part of President Trump’s anti-crime initiative in the capital. The effort has since expanded to other cities across the country.
Officials continue to investigate the shooting, and updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
