Herndon, VA — Detectives from the Fairfax County Police Department’s Crash Reconstruction Unit are investigating a fatal crash that occurred on November 25 in Herndon involving a 2007 Hyundai and a Fairfax County ambulance responding to an emergency.
According to police, the ambulance had its lights and sirens activated when it was struck by the Hyundai. The passenger in the Hyundai, Irvin Escobar Lujuan, 35, was transported to a local hospital, where he later died from his injuries. The driver of the Hyundai, Jose Lopez Martinez, 23, was treated for non-life-threatening injuries at the scene. Martinez has been charged with DWI, marking his second offense in five years. Preliminary reports indicate that both alcohol and speed may have contributed to the crash.
Authorities said the investigation is ongoing as detectives from the Crash Reconstruction Unit work to determine the exact circumstances that led to the collision. Police are asking anyone who witnessed the crash or who may have information that could assist with the investigation to come forward.
