INDIANAPOLIS — A heartbreaking scene unfolded late Monday night on the south side of Indianapolis, where a young mother was shot and killed inside her home while her 2-year-old child was nearby. The fatal shooting occurred around 11:54 p.m. in the 700 block of Turtle Creek North Drive, according to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD).
Officers were dispatched to the residence after multiple callers reported hearing a series of gunshots. When police arrived, they entered the home and discovered a woman suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Emergency responders pronounced her dead at the scene.
The Marion County Coroner’s Office identified the victim as 26-year-old Amanda Sheree Jones, a mother whose young child was inside the home at the time of the shooting. Police say the child was not injured but was immediately removed from the scene and placed in safe care.
As the investigation unfolded, two individuals were detained for questioning. IMPD described them as “persons of interest,” though no formal arrests had been announced. Detectives say preliminary findings suggest there is no ongoing threat to the community, but they continue working to determine the motive and circumstances surrounding the shooting.
“Now this child doesn’t have a mother,” IMPD Capt. Rob Rider said during a briefing at the scene. “I can tell you that whoever committed this heinous act—detectives are tirelessly working to identify them and bring justice for this young woman and her family.”
Investigators spent hours canvassing the apartment complex, searching for witnesses and reviewing surveillance footage in hopes of piecing together what led to Amanda’s tragic killing.
