St. John Parish Deputy Fatally Shot in Waggaman

WAGGAMAN, La. — A St. John the Baptist Parish sheriff’s deputy was fatally shot Thursday evening in Waggaman. Authorities identified the victim as 35-year-old Shaquille Guerin, who was killed by his brother, 32-year-old Darius Guerin of Marrero.

The shooting occurred just after 5:30 p.m. in the 30 block of Marigold Lane. Deputies arriving at the scene found Shaquille Guerin lying in the street with at least one gunshot wound. Emergency responders and deputies attempted life-saving measures, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Law enforcement located the vehicle used by Darius Guerin and pursued it to the 100 block of Jean Lafitte Boulevard in Lafitte. Guerin ran from the vehicle but was apprehended, and a firearm was recovered. He has been booked with second-degree murder.

Shaquille Guerin had served with the St. John Sheriff’s Office for eight years, working in both the uniform patrol division and the detective bureau. Sheriff Mike Tregre described him as a dedicated public servant who brought positivity to the office and was a valued teammate.

Guerin is survived by his wife, Roxanne, and their three children.
