The community of Lehigh Acres is heartbroken as we mourn the tragic loss of 27-year-old Resa Unwritten, who was killed in a devastating crash on Douglas Lane. According to the Florida Highway Patrol, Resa was walking west along the eastbound lane of the roadway on Thursday evening with another woman, a man, and a 2-year-old child in a stroller when a speeding vehicle traveling in the wrong lane struck all four of them.
Troopers say the driver, 42-year-old Garry Joseph, was traveling westbound in the eastbound lane at high speed when he hit the group. Resa suffered catastrophic injuries and died at the scene before help could arrive. The others—a 27-year-old woman and a 2-year-old girl—remain in critical condition, while a 31-year-old man sustained serious injuries. After the collision, Joseph continued driving through several yards before stopping and fleeing on foot. He was later arrested and is now charged with DUI manslaughter, leaving the scene of a crash involving death, and leaving the scene with serious injuries.
Resa’s sudden and heartbreaking passing has left her family, friends, and the entire community in deep grief. She was a loving, compassionate young woman whose presence brought comfort and joy to those around her. Her life, filled with warmth and hope, was cut short in a moment of senseless recklessness.
As her loved ones struggle to make sense of this unimaginable loss, may they find strength in the memories she leaves behind—the laughter, kindness, and love she shared so freely. Her absence leaves an ache that cannot be filled, but her spirit will forever live on in the hearts of those who knew her.
Tonight, we honor Resa’s life.
We pray for the healing of the survivors.
And we join her family in seeking justice and peace.
Rest in love, Resa Unwritten.
Gone too soon, but never forgotten.
