PLACER COUNTY, Calif. — Authorities have identified the man fatally shot during a law-enforcement encounter Tuesday evening at Dry Creek Community Park as 31-year-old Jacob Cole Rushing.
According to the Placer County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to the park around 6:30 p.m. following reports of suspicious activity. Upon arrival, deputies encountered Rushing in the parking lot and observed that he was holding a large knife. Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Elise Soviar said deputies attempted to communicate with Rushing in an effort to calm the situation and understand what was occurring.
While deputies were speaking with him, the situation escalated rapidly. Early information indicates that Rushing suddenly advanced toward a deputy while still armed, prompting the deputy to fire their weapon in what officials described as a perceived immediate threat. Rushing was struck and died at the scene despite swift emergency response efforts.
No deputies or bystanders were injured. Officials emphasized that deputies attempted de-escalation before the sudden escalation occurred, noting that deputies are extensively trained in communication and crisis management to reduce the need for force whenever possible.
As standard protocol in cases involving deadly force, the deputy who discharged their weapon has been placed on administrative leave pending a thorough review. Two investigations are now underway: an internal investigation by the Placer County Sheriff’s Office and an independent investigation by the Placer County District Attorney’s Office. Both agencies will analyze evidence, interview witnesses, and review any available body-worn camera footage to determine whether the use of force was legally justified.
Authorities acknowledged the community’s desire for clarity and pledged to release additional verified information as the investigation progresses. They have not yet provided further details about the events leading up to the confrontation or whether Rushing had prior contacts with law enforcement that day.
