Valparaiso, IN — The Valparaiso community is mourning the tragic loss of Austin Palmateer, 24, who passed away following a single-vehicle crash on Wednesday, November 26, 2025. The incident occurred near the intersection of County Road 700 N and State Road 149.
According to the Porter County Sheriff’s Office, officers were dispatched at approximately 8:12 a.m. after receiving reports of a vehicle submerged in water. Upon arrival, they discovered a 2002 Kia in Salt Creek. Austin, the sole occupant, was found outside the vehicle in the water and was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Preliminary investigations indicate the vehicle was traveling eastbound on County Road 700 N when, for an unknown reason, it left the roadway to the north and entered Salt Creek. The vehicle remained submerged when officers arrived. The Porter County Coroner’s Office confirmed Austin’s identity, and autopsy and toxicology reports are pending.
Austin’s sudden passing has left family, friends, and the Valparaiso community in deep sorrow. Residents and neighbors remember him as a kind, thoughtful young man whose presence brought warmth to those around him. His life, though tragically cut short, made a lasting impact on those who knew him.
