Family, friends, and the communities of Cincinnati and Ohio County are mourning the heartbreaking loss of Vernon Smith, who tragically died following a two-vehicle crash on Monday evening, November 24, 2025. His sudden passing has left a deep void in the lives of all who knew and loved him.
According to the Ohio County Sheriff’s Office, the crash occurred around 6:30 p.m. in the 5100 block of Milton Bear Branch Road near Dillsboro, Indiana. Vernon was driving a passenger vehicle when his car and an oncoming combine used for harvesting collided. Deputies say Vernon’s vehicle struck the front tire of the combine as the two traveled in opposite directions. The impact caused severe, life-threatening injuries.
First responders from the Bear Branch and Rising Sun fire departments, Rising Sun EMS, and the Ohio County Sheriff’s Office rushed to the scene. Vernon was transported to UC Medical Center, where medical teams fought tirelessly to save him. Despite their efforts, Vernon died from his injuries, leaving loved ones devastated.
The driver of the combine was not injured. Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collision.
