In Loving Memory of Abbigal Garbers

The community is mourning the heartbreaking loss of 19-year-old Abbigal Garbers of Morenci, Lenawee County, who tragically lost her life in a two-vehicle crash Monday evening in LaSalle Township, just south of Monroe. The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office is leading the investigation into the devastating incident, which also left another driver seriously injured.

According to officials, the collision occurred around 5:28 p.m. on South Telegraph Road (U.S. 24) near West Stein Road. Deputies and emergency responders rushed to the scene after receiving reports of a severe head-on collision involving two passenger vehicles.

Investigators determined that Abbigal had been driving a gray 2010 Toyota Corolla northbound when, for reasons still under review, her vehicle crossed the centerline and entered the opposing lane. Her car collided head-on with a gray 2015 Hyundai Sonata traveling southbound, driven by 35-year-old Palmer G. Merkel of Temperance.

The impact was catastrophic. The Hyundai came to rest in the middle of the roadway, while Abbigal’s Toyota ended up along the southbound shoulder. Both vehicles were heavily damaged, requiring assistance from multiple emergency agencies.

Abbigal was transported to ProMedica Toledo Hospital, where she was later pronounced deceased despite medical efforts. Her passing has left family, friends, and her community devastated. Authorities extended their deepest condolences to all who loved her during this unimaginable time.

Merkel was taken to St. Vincent Medical Center in Toledo, where he remains hospitalized in serious condition. Deputies noted that both drivers were wearing seat belts; however, the violent nature of a head-on collision often leads to critical injuries even when proper safety measures are in place.

A coordinated emergency response followed the crash, including the LaSalle Township Volunteer Fire Department, Monroe Community Ambulance, and the Sheriff’s Office Chaplain Program and Victim Services Unit. Their support ranged from medical care to emotional assistance for those affected.

Driver inattention has been identified as a possible factor, though investigators emphasize that the case remains active. They continue to review roadway evidence, witness statements, and vehicle data in order to understand what led to the crash.

Authorities are urging anyone who witnessed the incident or has helpful information to contact the Traffic Services Division at 734-240-7548. Anonymous tips may be shared through Crime Stoppers of Michigan at 800-SPEAK-UP.

As the investigation continues, officials ask the community to keep Abbigal’s family—and all those impacted—in their thoughts. Her life, filled with promise and potential, was tragically cut short, and she will be remembered with love, sorrow, and profound respect.

May Abbigal Garbers rest in eternal peace.
