SPARTANBURG COUNTY, S.C. – The Spartanburg community is mourning the tragic loss of 16-year-old Brodarrien Tate, who was fatally shot Monday evening at the Bryant Apartment Complex on Bryant Road. The incident also left a 34-year-old bystander injured while providing aid to Brodarrien. The adult victim was shot in the leg but is expected to recover.

According to the Spartanburg County Coroner’s Office, Brodarrien was shot in a parking lot near his residence. Coroner Rusty Clevenger described the teen’s death as a profound loss for the community. “They’re all tragic, I don’t care if they’re 99-years-old, but 16-years-old…that’s a lot of potential lost in any one given human being,” Clevenger said.
Local organizations are stepping up to support grieving families. Angelia Edwards, co-founder of the Stop the Violence Coalition, emphasized the importance of community support, particularly during the holiday season. The coalition offers financial, medical, and mental health assistance to families affected by such violence. Edwards stressed the need for adults to guide younger generations toward safer choices.
Law enforcement continues to investigate the shooting, and no suspects have been named. Authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward to help bring justice. Tips can be reported anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC.
Brodarrien Tate’s life, though tragically cut short, is remembered for the promise and potential he carried. The community mourns a bright young life lost too soon and calls for collective action to prevent future tragedies. May Brodarrien rest in peace, and may his family find comfort and support in the wake of this heartbreaking loss.
