Tragic Shooting in Waterloo Claims Life of 21-Year-Old Nyavais Johnson

WATERLOO, IA — The Waterloo community is mourning the sudden and tragic loss of 21-year-old Nyavais Johnson, a resident of Waterloo, who was fatally shot on Friday, November 21, 2025.

According to the Waterloo Police Department, officers responded at approximately 11:01 a.m. to a report of a shooting at 236 Boston Avenue. Upon arrival, officers located Johnson, who had sustained gunshot wounds. Patrol officers immediately began life-saving efforts until Waterloo Fire personnel arrived on scene and took over care. Johnson was transported by Waterloo Fire Ambulance to Allen Hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased.

In connection with the investigation, 31-year-old Jessie James Harmon III has been arrested on charges including Intimidation with a Weapon, Prohibited Person in Possession of a Firearm, and Violation of Probation. Authorities remind the public that a criminal charge or warrant is an accusation, and the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.

Nyavais Johnson is remembered by family, friends, and community members as a young man full of potential, whose life was tragically cut short. The suddenness of his passing has left a deep impact on those who knew and loved him, and the Waterloo community is rallying around his family in their grief.
