GRANITE FALLS, N.C. — A quiet Sunday evening turned tragic in Caldwell County when 38-year-old Michelle Lynn Berry, of Lenoir, was fatally struck while walking along US 321. The North Carolina State Highway Patrol confirmed the deadly crash, which occurred on November 16, 2025, at approximately 6:35 p.m.
Troopers say Berry had been walking on an unlit stretch of US 321 near Glen Ridge Drive when she entered the southbound lanes. A 2021 GMC Sierra, driven by 34-year-old Issac Nathaniel Winkler of Granite Falls, collided with her. According to investigators, Berry was wearing dark-colored clothing at the time, which made her difficult to see in the low-light conditions.
Emergency crews responded immediately, but the impact was severe. Berry tragically succumbed to her injuries at the scene, leaving family members and the community grieving the sudden loss.
Winkler, who remained at the location and cooperated with law enforcement, was not injured. After evaluating the circumstances, troopers said that neither impairment nor speeding appeared to be factors. Based on the evidence gathered so far, the Highway Patrol confirmed that no charges are anticipated.
US 321 was partially shut down for nearly two hours as investigators documented the scene, interviewed witnesses, and worked to determine the sequence of events. Traffic was later reopened after the roadway was cleared.
The incident has renewed conversations in the community about pedestrian safety in poorly lit areas, especially during the early evening hours when visibility quickly diminishes.
