COLUMBUS, Ga. — A deep sense of sorrow has settled over the Columbus community following the death of 31-year-old Xavier Trent Igus, who was fatally shot Sunday evening, November 16, at a local hotel. The Columbus Police Department confirmed his identity as the investigation into the deadly shooting continues.
Officers were dispatched to the Budgetel Inn & Suites on Victory Drive at approximately 7:19 p.m. Sunday after multiple 911 callers reported hearing gunfire. When police arrived at the scene, they found Igus suffering from severe, life-threatening injuries caused by a gunshot wound. Emergency medical teams worked urgently to stabilize him and transported him to Piedmont Columbus Regional – Midtown. Despite their efforts, Igus was pronounced dead shortly after arrival, leaving family, friends, and loved ones devastated.
Those who knew Igus say the loss is almost too heavy to comprehend. They describe him as a young man whose presence brought light and connection to those around him — someone who deserved far more life than he was given. His passing has created a painful void, one that countless people now struggle to understand and accept. Police say the suspect fled before officers arrived, and no arrests have been made. Authorities have not yet released a description of the individual involved or a possible motive. Detectives with the Violent Crimes Unit spent hours at the hotel late Sunday, gathering evidence, interviewing potential witnesses, and reviewing surveillance footage from the area.
