Savannah Man Killed After High-Speed Pursuit Ends in Violent Crash on Highway 204

CHATHAM COUNTY, Ga. — A tragic end to a high-speed pursuit early Sunday morning has left a Savannah community grieving the loss of 33-year-old Malic Stevens, who died after a crash on Highway 204.

According to the Georgia State Patrol, the incident began just before 2 a.m. when a Trooper attempted to stop a vehicle clocked at more than 100 miles per hour on Highway 204. Instead of pulling over, authorities say Stevens continued driving, setting off a pursuit that would span both directions of the highway.

Stevens reportedly fled westbound before exiting at King George Boulevard, looping back onto the highway and heading east. Troopers attempted to bring the dangerous chase to an end, first trying a PIT maneuver that did not stop the vehicle. A second attempt moments later was successful, but the outcome was devastating.

Stevens’ vehicle struck the median wall at high speed and overturned. In the violent rollover, he was ejected from the vehicle, thrown over the median wall, and into the westbound lanes of Highway 204. Troopers found him moments later and began administering aid, but the injuries were too severe. Stevens was pronounced dead at the scene.

In the still-dark early morning hours, the quiet stretch of highway filled with flashing lights and investigators working to piece together what had happened. For troopers at the scene, the outcome was deeply sobering. What began as an attempt to stop a dangerous driver ended in a loss of life that will forever impact a family and a community.

The Georgia State Patrol’s Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team responded to assist with the investigation, which remains ongoing.

Loved ones of Stevens are now left to absorb the sudden tragedy, remembering a life cut short in a moment of chaos and heartbreak on a Chatham County roadway.
