One Dead, Four Law Enforcement Officers Injured in Osage County Shooting Near Carbondale

OSAGE COUNTY  — A domestic disturbance call near Carbondale turned into a violent shooting incident Saturday morning, leaving one man dead and four law enforcement officers injured, according to the Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI).

Just after 10:30 a.m. on Nov. 15, deputies with the Osage County Sheriff’s Office and troopers with the Kansas Highway Patrol (KHP) responded to a home near South Topeka Avenue and West 113th Street after a woman living at the residence contacted authorities for help.

When deputies and troopers arrived, they encountered 22-year-old Stephen M. McMillan outside the home. According to KBI Director Tony Mattivi, an exchange of gunfire erupted within minutes. Three deputies and two KHP troopers discharged their weapons during the incident.

McMillan was struck and died at the scene. A 77-year-old relative inside the home was also injured during the shooting.

Law enforcement confirmed that one trooper and three deputies were wounded. Two of the deputies required surgery and are reported to be in good condition; the third deputy has since been discharged from the hospital. The injured KHP trooper and McMillan’s relative are also expected to recover.

KHP Superintendent Erik Smith said the encounter escalated rapidly.

“After being on scene for less than 10 minutes, gunfire erupted,” Smith said during a press conference. “The suspect died from injuries he received from gunshot wounds.”

The KBI emphasized that the investigation is ongoing and that early information remains preliminary. Their independent review will examine all events leading up to the shooting, including statements from witnesses, law enforcement, medical personnel, and evidence collected at the scene.

The Topeka Police Department confirmed it sent officers to assist but reported no TPD personnel were injured.

In the aftermath, law enforcement leaders expressed support for those hurt in the incident.

“Our hearts and prayers go out to the Osage County Sheriff’s Office deputies and the Kansas Highway Patrol trooper who were injured,” officials said in a statement. “Please keep them, their families, and their friends in your thoughts during this time.”
