The Oconee community is mourning the sudden and tragic loss of 62-year-old Rodney Lyle Palmer of Maggie Valley, North Carolina, who passed away Saturday afternoon after apparently falling from his boat while fishing on Lake Hartwell. According to the Oconee County Coroner’s Office, the incident occurred in the Tugaloo River section of Lake Hartwell, near the South Union Community. Rodney had dropped off his son and a friend along the shoreline around 2:30 p.m. so they could go deer hunting, while he stayed behind to fish. When the men returned at approximately 5:40 p.m., they found the boat unoccupied in the middle of the cove. Emergency responders were notified at 6:11 p.m., and divers later recovered Rodney’s body from about eight feet of water at 8:20 p.m. He is presumed to have died between 3 p.m. and 5 p.m.
